One law for all
Sir, —There is a minority which argues vehemently that "reverse discrimination” does not exist in New Zealand or that this term does not apply to our circumstances. The recent court decision as to Maori fishing rights surely confirms this discrimination. Whatever historical implications may be drawn into the argument, a fundamental of our legal system should be that its laws apply equally to all New Zealanders, whatever race, creed or religion. When one cuts through the rhetoric and legalities, the net result of this court case is that it clearly discriminates in favour of Maoris and is perhaps a hint of many further similar decisions yet to be made. Is it not now time that the existence of special advantages to Maoris be re-assessed? Is discrimination in favour of one race within a nation not equally odious as discrimination against that race? — Yours, etc.,
W. R. MITCHELL. August 31, 1986.
