Volunteers have diverse backgrounds
Volunteers aged between 18 and 70 would staff the police kiosk in Cathedral Square, usually two at a time, said the community volunteer- coordinator, Mr Sandy Brunt. About 50 people had offered to staff the kiosk, although more would be welcome, he said. Mr Brunt, who initiated the Speak Up and Opera--tion Identification campaigns in Christchurch, said that the backgrounds were as diverse as their ages. • The volunteers included former policemen and policewomen, security guards, retired managers, and young people interested in joining the
police. I After a day-long traini ing course the volunteers would work a maximilm : of two four-hour stints each week, he said. No women would be allowed to staff the late shift, from 8 p.m. to midnight, initially because of concern about safety, said Mr Brunt. That restriction would be reviewed. Free - car-parking space had been given by Noahs Hotel. Mr Brunt, who is in his 60s, said that organising the venture had been hectic although the pace should slow down now that the kiosk was open. Mr Brunt works part-time as a lighting-ware manufacturer.
