Pronto King to start in sprint at Ashburton
By
ALEX McMILLAN
Pronto King will start in the Woolhams Woolstore Handicap (1200 m in preference to the 1600 m Star Time Caterers Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, according to his Riccarton trainer, Michael Pitman.
Pitman paid up with three runners for the Ashburton County Racing Club’s first day open sprint — Pronto King, Pokare and White Lip — but he said last evening that it was likely White Lip would miss the 1200 m event as he was not happy with the weight (54kg) allocated the mare. He considers that she would
be at a disadvantage having to give o.skg to Satiny’s Pride. Pronto King will be ridden on Saturday by Jodie Woledge, with Jocelyn Fallen on Pokare and Tane Matthews on White Lip, if she does line up. Jocelyn Fallen, aged 15, an apprentice with the Pitman stable, has been engaged to ride the likely favourite, The Mean Machine, in the second leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday, the White Robe Lodge Stud Handicap. Fallen, who rode the stable runner, Godunov, to win at Washdyke last month, will claim 4.5 kg on Saturday.
The first day of the Ashburton meeting will mark the resumption of the highly promising Osmunda Hili, the winner of three races to date from the Pitman stable, but sidelined for 11 months as the result of a split pastern. The four-year-old son of Osmunda will resume racing in the White Robe Lodge Stud handicap and will be ridden by Jodie Woledge. N.L jockeys riding The North Island jockeys, Graeme Lord and Roger Booth, will be in action on both days of the Ashburton meeting. Lord will renew his
association with the promising hurdler, Macho Man, in the County Hurdles on Saturday, and will also partner the son of Rocky Mountain in the Chelandry Stud Hurdles on the second day on Tuesday. Lord has ridden the Joe Shaw-trained gelding on one occasion previously, finishing third on the middle day of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. Roger Booth will ride Almagelee and Gay King, members of Cathy Wildbore’s Turangi team, on Saturday and will also be on the Ray Pankhursttrained maiden, Stonehaven Lad.
