Village green in new year

Merivale will have its village green reserve but not before Christmas as the developers had hoped. Promoters of the Merivale village project at the comer of Papanui Road and Office Road want the Christchurch City Council to take over the village green and lake area planned for the complex.

The company, Mutan Holdings, Ltd, envisaged the reserve and lake development beginning in October and being finished by Christmas. But the City Council is willing to develop only 600 square metres of open space, and at a time when funds are available. It does not want to develop

the lake, which it believes would be more of an attraction to users of the motel units on the site than the general public. Councillors voted last evening to negotiate the acquisition of the 600 square metres and to consider allocating funds for the reserve’s development when the 1987-88 budget is drawn up next year.
