Cr Hunt attacks dumping charges

The financial management of the Christchurch metropolitan refuse scheme has been attacked by a Riccarton Borough councillor, Mr Gerald Hunt. The council, at its meeting last evening, discussed the increase in dumping charges suggested by the Metropolitan Refuse Committee. Cr John Warren said he was worried that instead of paying $6 to take a trailer-load of rubbish to a transfer station, people would begin dumping it on the side of the road.

Cr Hunt compared the $6 charge with a charge of $1 which he said he paid to dump rubbish at

the Waimairi rubbish tip a few years ago.

He said that while the committee might justify the increased charge by saying it had to cover losses from previous years, it should look at the way the stations were run.

"One of these days, some smart little fellow is going to take the whole lot over and run it at a profit for us, because at the moment it is just one big source of expense,” Cr Hunt said.

Cr Roy Lester, the council’s representative on the committee, told Cr Hunt that some committee members felt the same way.
