New jobs for mill workers

About 50 redundant workers from the U.E.B. spinning mill at Bromley already have new jobs, less than a week after the mill stopped production. The company, which announced last Tuesday that it would close the mill, leaving 248 without jobs, has put a lot of effort into helping redundant staff find other jobs. A job search co-ordina-tion centre with a staff of two full-timers and some part-time assistants will be at the mill probably for another 10 days. By 4 p.m. yesterday the

centre had had 140 job offers from 105 employers. From these, 50 workers had accepted jobs and quite a few others had firm offers which they were seriously considering, said a company spokesman. The Canterbury Employers’ Association has helped by sending circulars on behalf of U.E.B. appealing to employers to offer jobs. A spokesman for U.E.B. said that about 2000 employers would receive the circulars this week.
