‘No harassment’ of Stone Kingdom Trust

The Buller County Council was in no way harassing the Stone Kingdom Trust, said the council’s planning officer and health inspector, Mr Colin Comber. Six members of the trust were jailed recently for non-payment of $4OOO in fines imposed for living in tents.

In a report in “The Press” of August 23, Mr Comber was quoted as saying: “If they decided to live in permanent accommodation that fits our bylaws, we would leave them alone.”

He said on Sunday, “That comment attributed to me implies that there

is harassment by the council, which is not so. “What I said was, ‘lf the trust obtained the required planning permission and building permits and proceeded to build permanent accommodation, the matter would be resolved’.” The trust had not been required to take out a dangerous goods licence, as reported, said Mr Comber. The council had been concerned about the amount of dangerous materials being stored and the question of a licence had been considered but no order was made, he said.
