Holstein hit by run of injuries

Two weeks ago everything was looking rosy for Ewen Holstein as he prepared his Canterbury team for the P. 0.5.8. national hockey tournament, which starts in Wellington next Monday. He had no injuries in his squad and there was the possible bonus of Balvant Bhana, one of the most experienced forwards in New Zealand, being available again. But then things started to go awry. First Greg Pierce, who would have been the centre half for the main matches at tournament, broke a thumb playing for New Zealand against Australia in the three-nation series earlier this month.

Pierce is now out of the tournament, but hopes to be available for the New Zealand World cup team which will leave on September 20 for England. Last week, only two days after declaring his availability for the national tournament, Bhana damaged knee ligaments and is now in doubt for Wellington. Bhana has been receiving physiotherapy for the last week and a decision will be made on his availability towards the end of this week.

On top of that Mark Burtt injured a foot in the final club round on Saturday and he, too, is receiving physiotherapy in an attempt to regain fitness for the tournament.
