Jones still angry

NZPA staff correspondent Invercargill

The Australian rugby coach, Alan Jones, intensified his attack on second test referee, Derek Bevan, yesterday.

Mr Jones said errors made by the Welshman on Saturday — his refusal to allow a try by the Wallaby, Steve Tuynman, and his failure to spot a knock-on which led to New Zealand’s try — were not acceptable at test level.

“These things wouldn’t happen in a Wimbledon

final and that is what we had on Saturday,’’ Jones said. “This is international rugby and that kind of thing is incredible. The circumstances of Saturday are beyond belief. “I was glad to see that even Nick Farr-Jones’ kick was involved in a prodigious knock-on which resulted in a try.

“We’re not talking about six points of Tuynman’s but four points of Kirk’s as well.

“It’s extraordinary that this can happen in international rugby. It’s an in-

dictment of the whole show when the local press acknowledge that there has been a knock-on that everyone has seen except the referee.”

Mr Jones said Sunday newspaper claims that he was whinging or refereebashing were contradicted by facts borne out by television replays.

“How can it ever be whinging when you allude to obvious statements of fact? Botica knocked on, Tuynman scored. That’s not whinging, they are realities which went unchallenged.”
