Teacher advertisements

Sir,—Why is it that the Education Department continues to advertise for teachers and emphasises a shortage? According to the latest “Gazette” there were no general primary teaching, positions available in Canterbury or the West Coast. Of the nine positions advertised, six were for headmasters. Of South Island teaching positions in high schools, only one was for arts subjects. All the rest were for maths, science or commerce. J

There are few positions available for teachers. According to department officials, the job situation will get worse. The advertising is misleading and looks suspiciously like a political ploy. — Yours, etc., PETER HASSALL. August 9,' 1986.

[Mr Marshall, Minister of Education, replies: “The Department of Education, together with the education boards, is currently engaged in the annual teacher training recruitment campaign. The aim of this campaign is to provide the supply of newly trained teachers for future years that will be needed if schools are to be adequately staffed. Although Mr Hassall may believe that few vacancies for teachers are available, his opinion appears to be based on an examination of only one of the 16 issues of the "Education Gazette” published so far this year. Furthermore, a number of secondary schools and education boards have been stating that they are experiencing difficulties in obtaining the services of qualified teachers to fill existing vacancies.”]
