Boy’s rare surgery
NZPA-AFP Singapore A two-year-old Scottish boy is recovering in a Singapore hospital after rare surgery, conducted by a Singaporean doctor, to replace bones in his leg. Dene Shevlin, who was bom with virtually no bone in his right leg below the knee, was operated on by Robert Pho, who removed the bony stumps below Dene’s right knee, then replaced them
with one of the two bones from his lower left leg. Blood vessels were also transplanted in the sevenhour operation. Dr Pho said his “preliminary assessment” was that the operation was a success but that doctors would know for sure only in a few months. Medical sources here said that only a handful of surgeons in the world could perform such a delicate operation.
