Workers leave rig

NZPA-AAP Perth Gas has started flowing from the North Rankin A platform in the north-west shelf field, off the Western Australian Coast, after occupying workers left the rig on Monday night. The dispute started on Wednesday when 14 workers were sacked for holding a stop-work meeting. The company said the men had left a well in an unsafe condition. Workers demanded their colleagues’ reinstatement When that was refused they went on strike and blocked helicopters sent out to bring them in. A Woodside Offshore Petroleum Company spokesman said the workers had not been reinstated. Woodside owns the rig, which supplies most of Western Australia’s power needs.

The workers left the platform after a threat by the state Government to fine them up to sAustlo, ooo ($12,500) each a day.
