Cement works cutting output
PA Dunedin Staff at the Burnside cement works are expected to be told today that production will be reduced which will result in some redundancies.
According to workers at the New Zealand Cement Holdings, Ltd, plant, production will be reduced to one kiln in the factory near Green Island, in Dunedin.
Company executives would make no statement yesterday, although the Burnside manager, Mr R. L. Pearson, confirmed that a statement about the future of the plant would be made later today. j;The managing director of N.Z.C.H., Mr D. M. Wilson, said from Christchurch last evening that
he could not make a statement to the news media before he had made one to the staff.
This was. to take place this morning. However, two workers at the Bumside factory said there was to be a partial closing, reducing production to one kiln and resulting in an unspecified number of workers losing their jobs.
There has been speculation recently that N.Z.C.H. would eventually close Burnside if plans for a new factory at Weston, near Oamaru, were given the go-ahead. However, Mr Wilson said in November, 1984, that the Weston project; would proceed only when marketing and financial conditions were suitable.
