More than 50 pieces of antique furniture, including this Georgian oak dresser with blue-and-white Chinese porcelain plates, are offered for sale from a Canterbury estate.
A collection of such rare, high-quality pieces from a local estate is most unusual, says Mr John Morrison, of Victoria Antiques. Mr Morrison usually imports his stock. He said that it was usually impossible to obtain items of such quality. The largest piece, the Georgian oak dresser and its blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, has already found a buyer.
One of the rarest articles is a Queen Anne chest of drawers, with the original brass peardrop handles. “It is a very early example of veneering in burr walnut, with crossbanded edges and herringbone inlays,” said Mr Morrison. The collection was brought from England about 40 years ago, but had been in the seller’s family for many years, he said.
In age, the pieces range from a 1580 court cupboard to an 1890 writing desk.
