A.N.Z.U.S. ‘will not affect war games’
NZPA-Reuter Singapore New Zealand’s suspension from A.N .Z.U.S. would not affect its role in naval exercises this week with Britain, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia, said Rear-Admiral Robin Hogg, leader of a British naval task force.
New Zealand was suspended from the defence pact with the United States and Australia after banning port calls by nuclear warships. The British Royal Navy aircraft carrier H.M.S. Illustrious arrived yesterday to lend air support to the war games, which will range 100,000 sq km across the South China Sea off Malaysia.
On board, Admiral Hogg said he was saddened by New Zealand's policy but said of the coming exercise: “We will have no problem working with them whatsoever.” “New Zealand is still a military presence and anything that contributes to stability in South-East Asia is a good thing.”
