New secretary for electrical workers

PA Wellington Mr John Fisher was elected the new general secretary of the Electrical Workers’ Union. His appointment comes after the retirement of well-known unionist Mr Tony Neary. Mr Fisher is branch secretary for the union in Auckland. Mr Neaiy described Mr Fisher as “very dedicated.” Mr Fisher was a qualified electrician and married with two children, Mr Neary said. “I first met him when he was a delegate on the

Kawerau mill extension,” Mr Neary said. He described Mr Fisher as politically non-aligned. Mr Neary said the union would move its head office to Auckland, where Mr Fisher would continue to live. When asked who would be the union’s advocate for the wage round starting next month, Mr Neary replied: “The old maverick will have to give that a lot of thought between now and September 8, when I formally retire.” But Mr Neary said his feeling at the moment was that Mr Fisher should be the union’s advocate.
