Holiday fares to Australia expected

LES BLOXHAM,

travel editor New Zealanders planning holidays in Australia are in for a pleasant surprise.. Air New Zealand and Qantas are expected to announce next week a new range of cheap fares across the Tasman. They will be $549 return to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, and $599 return to Townsville and Adelaide.

However, the “Great Australian Two-Step,” as the deal will be dubbed, will have a catch. Travellers will have to return to New Zealand from the city adjacent to the one in which they arrived. They will also have to pay the extra cost of travel between those cities. For instance, if they fly into Sydney they will have to return through either Melbourne or Brisbane, and if they

enter through Melbourne they will have to leave from either Hobart or Sydney. The higher Townsville fare will require travellers to use Brisbane for entry or departure. According to informed sources, the normal 21day advance purchase requirement for cheap fares will be shortened to seven days for the “two-step” deal which will be valid from *■ mid-September to early December.

The existing shoulderseason ap?x fare to Sydney is $639 return. The same fare to Brisbane is $721 return.
