Minister gives GST warning

PA Wellington The Minister ’of Consumer Affairs, Mrs Shields, warned yesterday confusion might arise from price tags showing two prices in the lead-up to the introduction of goods and services tax. All retailers are required to have GST pricing on goods by October 1. “To enable the changeover to be done with ease, and to avoid the need for last-minute ticketing, approval has been given for transitional pricing,” she said. One method retailers were using in preparation for the tax was two prices on items, one the present price and the other in readiness for October 1. "Retailers are entitled to use this form of marking to ease the transition phase in pricing: indeed it is a practical solution,” she said. “Consumers should, however, ensure that confusion does not occur and the correct price is charged.
