Designmarks and plaques received

Twelve companies will be presented with the Designmark Award today for their products, along with eight other companies who will receive corporate membership plaques. Companies receiving the Designmark Award are: Electrical Control Systems, Ltd, for its MDD Micro Controller. These are used largely in the baking industry to weigh ingredients properly and accurately. It is available in three different models, all of which have a print out facility which is useful for stock control purposes, monitoring production, and telling the operator of any faults occuring in the production. E. C. Gough, Ltd, for its new earthing stick system. This is a safety device for linesmen. These have clamps which are attached to wires on which linesmen work, on either side of the working space. Should the current switch on while a linesman works, the earthing system causes a shortage in the wire by conducting the live current to the ground. The earthing stick is damaged rather than the linesman being killed. C. W. F. Hamilton and Co for its 10 tonne mobile crane which is based on a tractor cab. This crane is innovative in that it has two supports which allows the driver or controller of the crane better visibility when operating it. It is extremely manoeuvrable with a radius over the outside wheels of 5.2 m. It also has a 10m boom reach which can be fitted with an optional winch. Mini Booms, Ltd, for its Travelling Boom Irrigator which is most popular for its economic running which, according to the company, costs about 14.7 cents an hour. It further calculates that $1.71 is spent to apply 25mm of water to each hectare. Different widths of axle can be applied for market gardening strips, and can also be adjusted to the height of berry bushes and similar crops. The irrigator works by a diaphram mechanism which, by the gentle pressure of water passing through a hose, moves the whole winch, and irrigator, forward. It is so light that the whole thing can be moved

manually by one person. Stuart Manufacturing for its new home heating convection heater which is available as a floor model, with legs, or wallmounted. There is an optional automatic or manual control. It comes in two sizes: 1500 watts or 2200 watts. The heater is offered in baked enamel — coloured beige or antique gold, or in vinyl, which is only available in a walnut woodgrain finish. M. W. Richardson, Ltd, for its modern lifestyle wall units and for its range of co-ordinated bedroom units which can be bought separately but can be mixed and matched to suit different tastes in home decor. There are seven units altogether: the dome-top china cabinet, poly-top china cabinet, cocktail cabinet, flat top china cabinet, audio/video tower, and base units, with or without drawers. These units are available in natural rimu, walnut stained mahogany or ecru lacquer (a biscuit tone). Bedroom units have the choice of a bedside cabinet, lowboy duchesse, tallboy duchesse, and con-, ventional duchesse. Mirrors are available with the poly-top and dometop. These can be fitted on the cabinet top or hung from the bedroom wall. Acpac Plastics, Ltd, for its long-life plastic used for greenhouses. It lasts 33 months, according to the company, which, if compared to other plastics is considerably durable. Its thermal properties are also well noted. This plastic comes in three gauges: 125, 150 and 200 microns, and in rolls 4m wide by 50m long. Other sizes and gauge can be made on request Wormaid Protective Products for its Ultraspec 2000 safety spectacles which are made of polycarbonate. They are antifog, anti-scratch, antistatic and resist up to 99.0 per cent of ultra-violet light according to the manufacturers. This product is made under license to a German firm U Vex Winter Optik. The heart of the system is the inclusion within the colour monitor, control circuitry. Using computer technology, it enables the user to generate, store, retrieve and display up to many screens or “pages” of graphic information in a chblce* of 64 colours. Special effects such as flashing pages, animation, pages rolling up or down and changing with a “Venetian blind” effect are all possible. In short,
