Ashburton downs Christ’s in chess
Ashburton has collected a 4-2 win over Christ’s College in the A grade round-robin play-offs of “The Press” schools chess competition. The results of the other A grade match between. Shirley Boys’ High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School will be published late, as five of the six matches went to adjudication. The B grade finalists will be Aranui, which was runnerup in the 1984 final, and Cashmere, a finalist in the grade for the first time. Aranui won zone one on a count-back of individual games from Mairehau after the two teams had drawn, 3-3, when they met in the sixth, round. Cashmere and Shirley C, both unbeaten, met in the final preliminary round in -zone two, Cashmere taking the vital contest, The defending champion, Cobham A, qualified from zone one in the C grade, also on a count-back of individual games from Linwood, while the intermediate school qualifier from zone two is Heaton, which beat Kirkwood last week in the deciding contest The final will be in the Christchurch Boys’ High School’s long room at 6.30 p.m. on August 20.
