Convertible released

IBM last week released in New Zealand the latest member of its personal computer family, the IBM PC Convertible. The-lap-top personal computer will cost $4751.

The Convertible, which was released in the United States two months ago, weighs less than 6 kilograms and is battery powered. It uses 3.5 inch disc drives, which are not compatible with the diskette drives on its other personal computers.

A spokesman for IBM says that initially the New Zealand subsidiary has not been able to get

as many units as it would have liked, but by October supplies should be freely available. ; >7 IBM has released the PC DOS operating system on 3.5 inch diskettes. Other software suppliers are expected to release their software on the new disc format.

IBM New Zealand has also dropped the price of its PC AT and PC XT by about 20 per cent and the basic PC by about 10 per cent The AT now comes with 512 K bytes of memory, a faster processor and a 30 megabyte hard disc drive. The XT now comes with 512 K bytes of memory and a 20 megabyte hard disc drive.
