Think Big’ costs
Sir,—The claims by John Fursdon, of Oxford (August 7), are ridiculous and misleading. The “Think Big” projects are currently returning SI3OOM in overseas funds, and a net return of SSSOM annually after interest rates and debt-servicing charges. It would seem strange that Mr Douglas, two years after becoming Minister of Finance, after the opening-of-the-books exercise should suddenly find that “Think Big” costs were the cause of all New Zealand's economic woes. Mr Fursdon’s claims about the National Party conference are ridiculous and inaccurate, but perhaps the balancing point should be made that Mr Fursdon is, and has been, a leading activist in the Rangiora Labour Party.—Yours, etc., JIM GERARD, M.P. for Rangiora. August 7, 1986.
