Fire guts DC10
NZPA-AP Chicago A fire swept through a DCIO jet at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport yesterday, less than an hour after 300 passengers had disembarked after returning from Hawaii. “From what we can see, we can assume it is a total loss,” said Mr Jim Hlavacek, vice-president of operations for America Trans Air.
It took about >6O firefighters using seven ire trucks an hour to extinguish the blaze by drenching the plane with foim. One • firefighter firas treated for an eye injury, but no-one else was injured. • [ The plane’s fuel tanks did not explode, said I a fire department spokesman, who speculated that the tanks must have been nearly empty. $
