More support for Waimairi

Up to 70 offers of support a day are being received for the Waimairi District Council’s anti-

amalgamation campaign, says the District Clerk, Mr Peter Chapple. ■ ' More than 1000 replies had been received since the council put forms in its last rates demand and its amalgamated issue of “Outlook,” the council newspaper. The forms are for opposition to one-city- amalgamation and can be used to offer services to the council’s campaign activities.

Mr Chapple said many replies were still coming from outside the district and there were several names on some forms. An independent Waimairi action group

against amalgamation had also advertised with forms for support and donations, he said.

One person had given money to the council and several indicated they would be. happy to help financially, but Mr Chapple said the council was not calling for financial support. If the council held a poll, it would need 15 per cent of the district's population, or 7200 people, to object to amalgamation but Mr Chapple said the responses would not be included in that number.

“We might ask them to canvass support it shouldn’t be hard, though, when over 1000 people have gone to the trouble of offering to help,” he said.
