No boost to economy before election
Wellington reporter
No artificial pre-elec-tion boost to the economy will occur, according to the Under-Secretary for Trade and Industry, Mr Peter Neilson. • - ' He told a window-frame manufacturers’ conference at Methven that such a boost might lessen longterm pain, but would do so at the cost of moving the economy from the path towards sustainable and noQ-inflationary growth. ‘ J r . It was inevitable that the rural downturn would filter through to other sectors of the economy to some extent.
Anti-inflationary poll? cles were:expected to put a squeeze , on investment during the year ahead, Mr Neilson said. Official forecasts were for real activity to decline in 1986-87 — the last full financial year before the next General Election.
A moderate recovery was forecast for 1987-88 in election year. The expected decline in general economic q^tivity,..would not be dealt with artificially by having a pre? election boost. v ’
