Nine men accused of ‘fixing’

Nine men were accused yesterday of conspiring to fix horse races to earn big profits in connection with the British colony's worst track scandal.

They appeared before a crowded Hong Kong courtroom after* being arrested this week by the anti-graft agency, the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Charged with conspiring to cheat at gambling were three Australians, jockeys David Brosnan, agad 32,

of Melbourne, and Patrick Trotter, aged 35, of Perth, and a trainer, Ronald Edwards, aged 60, also of Perth. A Hong Kong enjtrepreneur, Yang Yuanloong, aged 63, two other local businessmen and three jockeys also were charged. : No pleas were, taken and all were granted ah extension of bail of SHKSO,OOO dollars (SNZI2,BBO) to SHKI million ($NZ245,760). Passports were to be surrendered.

The Crown prosecutor, Mr lan McWalters, had sought the surrender of travel documents, saying the actions of the defendants “involved the criminal acquisition of enormous. sums of money.” Yang will appear in court again on August 22 and proceedings for the others were adjourned until September 12. Wong Yun-sang, another jockey arrested this week, failed to appear in court yesterdayMpecause of illness.
