Missionary has mixed reaction on acquittal

Miss Julie Miessen greeted her acquittal on proselytising charges with mixed reactions last evening.

“I am pleased to be acquitted but it does not make much difference to my situation — I have to stay in the country for 10 days so that any appeals can be lodged, then maybe up to three months for them to be dealt with,” she told “The Press” from the Kajang Assembly of God in

Malaysia. Miss Mieseen said defence counsel would definitely appeal against Grant Terrence Nesdale’s conviction. He has been fined SUS4OO and sentenced to one day’s jail, or three months jail. “He doesn’t feel he is guilty and does not want to pay the fine on principle,” said Miss Meissen.

She believed that the prosecution intended to appeal against her own and Mr Nesdale’s sen-

tences. “We are prepared to stay as long as we have to, but I would have liked to come home right now.” Miss Miessen will continue to live in an outreach owned by the church, and work at a children’s orphanage. Her mother, Mrs Bertie Miessen, said she was “quite happy with the decision — but it would have been nice if she could have come home.” Decision, page 6
