Singer admits heroin charge
NZPA-AP London British singer Boy George pleaded guilty yesterday to possessing heroin, and was fined £250 ($720) by a London magistrate. The singer, looking pale without the pancake make-up he often wears, spoke only three times and in monosyllables during the hearing at Marylebone Magistrate’s Court. He replied when asked if he understood the charge, to plead and whether he wanted the case switched to a higher court “He has manfully faced up to this drug problem and has helped the police in their inquiries,” said
his counsel, Mr Geoffrey Sturgess. Boy George, his hair dyed blond and worn in a spiky style, was charged under his real name, George O’Dowd. The magistrate, who gave the 25-year-old lead singer of Culture Club seven days to pay the relatively small fine, said he had taken into account that Boy George was undergoing treatment to try to kick heroin when he was arrested.
George, who confessed to having had a £2OO ($580)-a-week habit, later warned youngsters: “My message to kids is to give the drugs up.”
