PA Wellington Three petitions calling for the imposition of economic sanctions against South Africa were presented to Parliament when it sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. The petition of Brian Frederick Swete, of Oratia, and 34 others was presented by Mr R. K. Maxwell (Lab., Waitakere); that of Ivan Sowry, of Christchurch, and 17 others presented by Mr J. P. Anderton (Lab., Sydenham); and that of T. O. Newnham, of Mount Eden, and 203 others presented by Mr R. J. Northey (Lab., Eden). Mr Northey also presented the petition of Helen Lindsay and 513 others seeking suspension of ties with Chile until democracy was restored there. Reports of the Building Performance Guarantee Corporation, the National Water and Soil Conservation Authority, the University Grants Committee and University Institutions, the Urban Transport Council, and the Maori Education Foundation were tabled. Ministers answered 15 questions. Members then began the two-hour Wednesday general debate. After this, the. House agreed to postpone the second reading of the New Zealand Mission Trust Board (Port Waikato, Maraetai) Empowering Bill until the next sitting day. The Acting Leader of the House, Mr Hunt, moved that urgency be taken on all stages of the Land Tax Annual Bill. The House took urgency after a 42-27 division. An Associate Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, moved the introduction of the Land Tax Annual Bill. The bill was passed through all its stages. The Racing Amendment Bill was introduced and referred to the Internal Affairs and Local Government Committee. Mr Caygill then moved the introduction of the Superannuation Schemes Amendment Bill. As Acting Minister of Justice, Mr Caygill moved the introduction of the Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill. The bill was introduced and referred to the Justice and Law Reform Committee. The debate was interrupted when the House rose at 11 p.m.
