500,000 miles on clock

H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury recently clocked up 500,000 miles. It took the frigate almost 15 years to reach this figure since she was commissioned in Britain on October 22, 1971. The day she reached the 500,000-mile mark, July 23, the Canterbury was sailing between Suva and Cairns in fine weather — a contrast to the cold and wet day she

was commissioned. Five members of tbe Canterbury’s first crew were aboard on July 23. During her life, the Canterbury has been stationed off Mururoa to protest against French nuclear testing in the South Pacific, represented New Zealand at the Royal Navy Spithead review *n 1977, and has been awarded the prestigious Wilkinson Sword of

Peace for duties in the Indian Ocean. Three previous commanding officers of the frigate have risen to the post of Chief of Naval Staff. The present commanding officer, Commander John Granville, of Auckland, estimates that the frigate will have to be kept running for 30 years before she sails a million miles.
