Purple Crown to miss sprint

By J. J. Boyle The Foxton-trained Purple Crown will not be brought south for the Paparua Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. Instead the star of Dave Enright’s team will open his six-year-old career in the Shearwalk Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday. A decision to go after the $20,000 Pukekohe race was made yesterday after Purple Crown had been accepted for the Paparua Handicap. The Shearwalk Handi-

cap is run over 1600 m, and Purple Crown has been weighted at 57.5 kg. He was given 58.5 kg in the 1400 m Paparua Handicap at Riccarton. Purple Crown will travel north from Foxton today, and Mark Barnsley will ride him on Saturday. Dave Enright said yesterday that he still had the AIC International Winter Cup in mind for Purple Crown but had to agonise over a decision about the lead-up race this week.
