Hefty surplus
West Germany, under fire from the United States for not stimulating its domestic economy, posted another hefty trade surplus in June, according to provisional figures. The Federal Statistics Office said West Germany’s exports outstripped its imports by 9.9 billion marks (SNZ9 billion dollars) in June — just short of the record 10 billion mark (SNZ9.OB billion) surplus set in April this year. The May surplus was 8.1 billion marks (SNZ7.2 billion). West Germany’s trade surplus for the first half of the year was, at 50.3 billion marks ($NZ45.6 billion), 56 per cent bigger than that registered in the same 1985 period.
