P.M. rules out direct approach

Wellington reporter New Zealand would make no direct approach to the South African Government to condemn the crackdown on political opponents, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday. He told Parliament that South Africa was in no doubt that New Zealand abhorred widespread detention without trial. He had told the Commonwealth SecretaryGeneral, Sir Shridath Ramphal, of New Zealand’s opposition to the South African Govern-

ment’s policies. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, was now meeting the leaders of black African States in Harare to “show quite conclusively that the New Zealand Government’s and public’s abhorrence of this repressive regime is solid, across the board and enjoys bipartisan support,” said Mr Lange. Responding to Opposition questions, he said that no direct contact had been made with South Africa because New Zealand had no diplomatic representation there.
