Summary not read

A police summary of facts relating to indecent assaults on two girls, aged seven and 11, was not read in open court on the application for the accused by Mr M. J. Glue in the District Court yesterday.

Mr Glue submitted that reading the summary would not be in the public interest

Sergeant M. J. South said that while the police had no objection to the summary being read, the officer-in-charge of the case had made the same request as Mr Glue. Interim suppression of the name of the accused, aged 24, was continued by Judge Hobbs.

He was convicted and remanded to August 13 for a probation report and sentence.

The police say the offending took place between January, 1985, and this month.

Although previously held in custody while a psychiatric report was ob-

tained, the accused was released on bail of $2OOO. CHARGE DENIED A charge of wilfully setting fire to rubbish knowing that it could damage a house was denied by Victor Vui, aged 18 (Mr M. J. Knowles). Vui is charged with committing the offence on July 13. He was remanded on bail to September 16 for a defended hearing. HIGH COURT A shop assistant who admitted a charge of sodomy, and five of indecent assault, was convicted and committed to the High Court for sentence on a date to be fixed. On the application of counsel, Mr S. C. Barker, interim suppression of the name of the defendant was continued. The remand was at large. DEPOSITIONS Trial by jury was sought

by Gary William McQuillan who is charged with burgling the Highway Tavern at Kirwee, the Kurow Beauty Salon, and with receiving 40 pairs of shoes, valued at $5OO, the property of the salon. McQuillan was remanded in custody to September 1 for the taking of depositions. The bail application was heard in Chambers. ARSON ADMITTED A woman who admitted wilfully setting fire to Antonio Hall, an accommodation hostel in Riccarton Road, last year, was convicted and committed in custody to the High Court on August 12 for sentence. Donna Maree Dixon, aged 20, a receptionist (Mr J. S. Halls), endorsed the charge sheet of the indictable offence thereby forgoing a depositions hearing. Dixon committed the offence on October 10 last year when damage estimated at $lBOO was done to the building.
