Conservation Week starts tomorrow

Conservation Week activities in Christchurch, to run from August 1 to August 10, have had to be organised without Government administrative or financial support for the first time. The Christchurch Conservation Week Committee was told in June that Government support had been withdrawn, said the committee’s chairman, Mr Bernard Hansen, this W66k. “We decided to carry on anyway and called on

the support of several organisations to produce a programme of activities,” he said. “Hopefully the new Ministry for the Environment will lend its support to future conservation week efforts but we will carry on even if it does not “The main thrust of our activities is to educate people and, in particular, to foster a conservation attitude among our youth. We have been able to organise more activities than last year,” said Mr

Hansen. The week will start tomorrow with the presentation of a first place group award to form seven biology pupils at Rangiora High School who helped conserve a valuable bird habitat on the Ashley River. Another A.N.Z. Bank sponsored award is to be presented to Andrea Byron, of Rangiora High School, for her contribution to information on native and introduced birds in North Canterbury.
