Govt signs $21M contract

PA Wellington The Government has signed a $2l million contract for a new Koreanbuilt tanker for the Navy. . The 12,300-ton vessel, 136 metres long with a speed of 14 knots and a crew of 35, is due for delivery about December next year. Equipment and installation costs will bring the total price to a' maximum of $27.7 million.

Contracts were signed yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn, the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear-Admiral Lin Tempero, the Korean Ambassador, Mr Phillip Choi, and Dr Kim Joo Shyn, of Hyundai Corporation, which will build the ship.

The tanker is to give the Navy greater flexibility in the Pacific, and is in accordance with the Government’s policy of

greater self-reliance after Oie breakdown of A.N.Z.U.S. arrangements, according to Government statements in May.
