No N.Z. swimmers qualify

From KEVIN TUTTY For the first time in four days of swimming at the Royal Commonwealth pool, New Zealand was not represented in the finals yesterday.

Five New Zealanders competed in the heats, but none was close to a position in the finals. That was not expected, though, because the Kiwis did not

have strength in any of the four events they contested.

Kerrylynne Torrance recorded Imin 5.64 s in the 100 m butterfly, which gave her twelfth fastest time. The fastest eight qualified for the final.

The other four swimmers finished in similar positions. Grant Forbes was twelfth fastest

in the men’s 200 m breaststroke heats and his team-mate, Richard Lockhart, was one place behind him. Forbes was just over two seconds away from a place in the final, which contained the world record holder, the Canadian, Victor Davis. Mike Davidson, a bronze medal winner in the 400 m freestyle earlier

in the week, swam the 200 m freestyle but did not expect to qualify for the final. He would have had to break the New Zealand record to reach it. Brent Foster also swam the freestyle as a warmup to the 200 m individual medley yesterday and performed better than he had in another secondary event earlier in the week.
