Top squash men

Only two players finished with perfect records in the 1986 men’s open grade inter-club squash competition which finished recently. Playing in the top slot for Sumner, the New Zealand representative, Paul Viggers, won all 13 of his contests while Burnside’s Nigel Lloyd scored 14 out of 14.

Viggers has yet to lose an inter-club match in four seasons in Christchurch, but this year, surprisingly, four of his matches went to five games.

Lloyd, who has put a lot of work into his game and his fitness this year, played the first half of the season at No. 3 before being promoted for the second half. Seven of his wins were achieved in straight games and only twice was he extended over five games. His team-mate, Michael Allred, suffered only one loss in 14 matches, losing to Lawrence Skurr at the end of the Blank Shield round.

Apart from Viggers, the most successful number ones were Robbie Burnett (Lancaster Park) who had a nine win, four loss record, and Elliott Jones (Christchurch) and Mark Crosbie (Burnside) who both won eight matches out of 13.
