Crane-damaged hotel may reopen soon
PA Auckland Auckland’s Regent Hotel may reopen to guests at the week-end when one of two boilers damaged by a fallen construction crane is hoped to be repaired. Fifteen workers yesterday began clearing the mess of mangled pipes, girders and collapsed ceiling from toe rooftop boiler room, ruined when the crane’s counter-weight plunged through it on July
The 18-tonne counterweight, which was removed on Sunday, landed on top of the No. 1 boiler, causing apparent severe damage. It also ripped out pipes to the No. 2 boiler, cutting off the hotel’s hot water.
Guests have been sent to other Auckland hotels since the accident, although smaller, temporary boilers have allowed Regent functions to continue.
The Regent’s general manager, Mr Andrew Thomson, said yesterday the boiler damage had not yet been assessed, but it was hoped to have toe No. 2 boiler repaired in a week. The two remaining pieces of the collapsed crane’s boom are expected to be lowered to the ground early today from the Wilson and Horton building and the adjacent half-completed office block in Albert Street.
