Te Mania bull sale
Although prices were well down on the record level of last year, two-year-old bulls were in strong demand at the twentieth annual Te Mania bull sale, near Parnassus, yesterday. Bulls sired by an Ameri-can-bred bull, Lord Patriot, which is now based in Australia, were eagerly sought by breeders from as far afield as Hawke’s Bay and Otago. Seventeen Lord Patriotsired bulls, from Mr Frank Wilding’s Te Mania stud, averaged $3652, compared with $5690 last year, and 14 bulls from other bloodlines averaged $2535. The over-all sale average for the Te
Mania stud was $3148 (4783 last year). -j The other vendor represented, Mr Ken Page of the Anstey Stud, Parnassus, sold five Angus bulls at an average price of $l3OO compared with $2075 last yeaf. The depth of the buying power was an encouraging feature in view of the downturn in the farming-industry. Competition was widespread between commercial breeders in North Canterbury and Marlborough and several bulls were bought bjr stations in Mid-Canterbury, i Lord Patriot’s • progeny, which were big-framed, well-
balanced bulls, dominated the sale and fetched the top prices. The highest price was $6200 ($26,000 last year) and two others sold at $6OOO. The remaining Lord Patriot bulls ranged from $2OOO to $4200, and the other Te Mania bulls sold from $l2OO to $4300. Two three-year-old Te Mania bulls sold at $2900 and $2700. The top priced Anstey Stud bull was $l6OO, followed by prices of $l5OO, $l2OO (twice) and $lOOO. Two Anstey bulls which failed to attract starting bids were the only passings.
