Navratilova seals U.S. victory

NZPA-Reuter Prague Martina Navratilova beat Czechoslovakia’s Hana Mandlikova, 7-5, 6-1, yesterday to clinch victory for the United States in the final of the Federation Cup, the women’s team tennis championship. Navratilova’s victory came after a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win by Chris Evert Lloyd over Helena Sukova and gave the top-seeded Americans an unbeatable 2-0 lead over the secondseeded home team.

It is the twelfth time the United States has won the title and broke a run of three successive Czechoslovak victories since the last American victory in 1982. With Navratilova’s parents among the 7000 crowd packed into the Stvanice Stadium for her first tournament there since she defected from Czechoslovakia in 1975, she broke Mandlikova’s serve in the twelfth game to take the first set. It seemed a watershed

for the Czechoslovak, aged 24, who threw away a 40-love lead and doublefaulted to concede the set. Mandlikova was only allowed one more game as the world No. 1 powered to victory in the second set, breaking Mandlikova’s service to love to win the match. Navratilova was hugged by the United States captain, Marty Riessen, and given a handshake by the Czechoslovak captain, Jiri Medonos.
