Crowe looks set for Essex

NZPA staff correspondent London The New Zealand batsman, Martin Crowe, appears set to play for the leading English county Essex next year. ' Crowe said yesterday he had had talks with Essex, but had made no final decision. An announcement is expected early this week. Essex, which won the county championship in 1984, and has dominated English one-day cricket in recent seasons, has a vacancy for an overseas player because the Australian captain, Allan Border, is returning home next month after serving just one year of a scheduled twoyear contract. Crowe played for Somerset In the 1984 season and is still registered there, but cannot get first team cricket with that county because of the presence of the West Indians, Viv Richards and Joel Garner.

Crowe, who scored an unbeaten century against Essex early in the New Zealand tour, said he was impressed by the facilities at Chelmsford, and the professional approach of the county.
