Brian Smith granted No. 1 trainer’s licence

Special correspondent Auckland

The former New Zealand trainer, Brian Smith, has been granted a No. 1 trainer’s licence in Sydney by the Australian Jockey Club. Smith is enjoying his most successful season since shifting to Australia some years ago. With just one meeting to go (at Canterbury tomorrow), Smith is in sixth position on the metropolitan trainers’ premiership in Sydney. He has 30 wins to his credit.

Smith, who shifted from Wyong to his present-day quarters at Rosehill about 18 months ago, has held a No. 2 licence, but this has been reviewed by the AJC and at its discretion a No.

1 licence has been granted. Enjoying the success of the Smith team has been the stable’s No. 1 rider, Shane Dye. Dye will finish third on the jockey’s premiership behind Jim Cassidy and Mick Dittman. Smith, who did so well with the top galloper Balmerino, has recently acquired two good rising four-year-olds in Khamacruz and Pharostan. Both horses are owned by Mr Robbie Porter and his father and are former members of Bart Cummings’ team. Khamacruz, a chestnut son of Sir Tristram and Lavender Hill, showed very good form in the autumn in Melbourne. He is being set for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
