National Bloodstock purchase eight mares

Another eight mares have been secured in Canterbury by National Bloodstock, Ltd, Auckland. All but two of them are carrying positive tests and, after they have foaled, they will be mated with stallions owned by the company.

Lucy Lumber and Spangle’s Charm were bought from the West Melton trainer, Jim Dalgety. Lucy Lumber is in foal to Lordship and Spangle’s Charm to Lumber Dream.

Lucy Lumber numbered the C. F. McCarthy Ladyship Stakes at Alexandra Park among her five wins. She is by Lumber Dream from Small Clinker, by Scottish Command. Small Clinker is also the dam of Tiger Talk and comes from the family which produced Kawarau Gold and other splendid winners for the Oamaru trainer, Frank Oliver. Spangle’s Charm is by Jack Chance from Spangled Hanover, the dam of Spangle’s Gold, Butler

Hanover, Span Out, Farm Boss and others and is a member of the highly successful family founded by the imported mare, Spangled Maiden. Ultra Sonic, with a positive test to My Striking Force, and Tact Mac, which has yet to be bred from, were also purchased from Dalgety.

Tact Mac is the first foal of Tact Hanover and is by Out to Win. She comes from the same family as Noodlum.

Ultra Sonic is the dam of the smart mare, Rely, and other winners in Man’s Desire and Ultra Scotch. She is closely related to Melton Monarch and Bolton Byrd and comes from one of the best families in the Stud Book.

Silky Wave, by Tiger Wave from Loarky, and Chin Chin Cherie, by Adover Rainbow from Petulus, were purchased from the West Melton trainer, Robert Dunn. Both are heavily in foal to

the boom sire, Smooth Fella.

Silky Wave, a capable pacer herself, comes from the same family as Dandy Briar and Falsehood, while Chin Chin Cherie is the dam of Gorky Park. The speedy trotter, Rona’s Pride, the winner of five races, was purchased from her partowner and trainer, Maurice O’Leary. It was originally decided to continue racing her, but she showed signs of breaking down so she is not being persevered with and will be put straight to the stud. Monreith, with a filly by Apollo’s Way at foot and in foal to Mostest Yankee, was bought from Mr Rony Maxwell. She is by Noodlum from Winnie’s Rose, the dam also of Captain Rainbow. All eight sales were negotiated by Mr Peter Andrews, of West Melton, who was recently appointed marketing co-or-dinator for the South Island by National Bloodstock.
