Miss Marjorie Allan
PA Napier The co-founder of the Hohepa Home network, Miss Marjorie Henrietta Mary Allan, has died at her home at Taradale. She was 80. Miss Allan, with the late Sir Lew Harris, pioneered the homes for the handicapped. There are now three Hohepa Homes — at Poraite, Clive, and Christchurch — catering for more than 120 children and adults. Miss Allan was born in Dunedin and educated at St Hilda’s Collegiate School. She took up music as a career after leaving school, holding appointmusic at Co-
lumba College, Dunedin, and Woodford House, Havelock North. She went overseas in the early 1950 s to study the work of Dr Rudolf Steiner. On return she pioneered work with the handicapped and cofounded the first Hohepa Home at Poraite.
She also pioneered curative work with eurythmy — a form of movement — and speech and painting. Miss Allan was' principal of Hohepa Home from 1957 until her retirement. In 1968 she was awarded the M.B.E. for her work with handicapped children. Ag.
