Govt makes changes to immigration jobs list
Wellington reporter
Changes have been made by the Government in the list of priority occupations for the immigration of skilled people to New Zealand. Additions and deletions to the list announced by the Minister of Immigration, Mr Burke, are effective from July 1.
The additions are: Chemical engineer, electrical engineer, electrical appliance service, electrical engineering technician, electronic engineer, mechanical engineer, metallurgist, refrigeration mechanic, and telecommunications technician. The deletions are: Carpenters and engineers (heating, ventilation, and refrigeration).
Mr Burke said the list was designed to reflect those skills sufficiently scarce that employers should be free to recruit them overseas.
Occupation was the main basis on which people could migrate to New Zealand, apart from family and humanitarian grounds. The list was reviewed every six months.
