Prieur tortured?
PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, is investigating a report that the Rainbow Warrior agent, Dominique Prieur, was “morally tortured” during her term in a New Zealand prison. London’s “Daily Express” published on Friday what was reported to be an interview with Prieur on the French atoll of Hao, where she and her fellow-agent, Alain Mafart, were taken last Wednesday. The “Express” quoted Prieur as claiming she had been “morally tortured” in jail. “They deprived me of sleep and tried to make me confess,” she was reported as saying. A spokesman for Mr Lange said he was taking a sceptical view of stories about Prieur and Mafart and their enforced 3-year stay on Hao, but his office was making inquiries about the “Express” report.
Meanwhile, Mr Lange was satisfied that a news media report that the French Prime Minister, Mr Jacques Chirac, would soon visit the agents on Hao was false.
