Higher risk for truckies

NZPA staff correspondent London Every time British truck-drivers overtake they run a 40 per cent risk of causing an accident, a study has found. Car drivers, on the other hand, overtake unsafely only 5 per cent of the time, according to a report from the Economic and Social Research Council.

After filming more than 5000 overtaking manoeuvres on main roads, the council concluded that the safest of all drivers were those at the wheel of high performance cars such as Porsches and Ferraris.

The council said most dangerous overtaking occurred at speeds between 50kmh and 70kmh because of what it determined was a “build-up of frustration at that speed.”
