Rattray, Goodwin ahead

Two national A ski team members, Kate Rattray and Graeme Goodwin, headed off the opposition in the Hertz Mount Hutt Early Bird giant slalom yesterday.

This was the first national points race of the season and all the top Canterbury racers were attracted. The course for both men’s and women’s events at Mount Hutt was of F.I.S. length, carrying 38 gates for the first run and 34 for the second run.

Rattray and Goodwin showed clearly that the developing young Canterbury racers have to find better form if they plan to match the class shown by this pair.

lan McLean made a break of 0.15 s on the field in the first run of the men’s event, but he could not withstand the pressure of Goodwin’s second run where his 1.53 s lead gave

him a convincing win from McLean with Nils Coberger in third place.

In the women’s giant slalom Rattray gave a faultless display of technical ski-ing to take the title by a combined margin of 5.67 s from Juliet Satterthwaite with Adele Coberger a further 1.60 s back in third place.

Some smart times were recorded by two 14-year-olds, Guy Davies and Stefan Coberger, who showed the benefit of good coaching at Mammoth Mountain, California, over the northern winter.

Davies took the J2 age group gold medal with Coberger second and Chris Knight 5s back in third place. Alice Gilroy, the most successful junior of 1985, had little diffi-

culty taking first place from Annelise Coberger in the J2 girls’ section.
