Women’s affairs
Sir,—So the Ministry of Women’s Affairs offices have been refurbished to the pretty tune of $269,930. Well, it may look all pink, pretty and chic, but what good will this extravagance do for the women of New Zealand? How much comfort will the rural, unemployed and redundant women obtain from knowing that Ms O’Regan and her staff are working in luxurious surroundings? Women do not need a Ministry of Women’s Affairs for the following reasons: Women are not a discriminated minority group; they are 51 per cent of the population; setting up of a Ministry of Women’s Affairs is seen as forming a separatist group; affairs of women cannot be dealt with in isolation as women are part of families and men and women complement
each other; women should be the concern of all members of Parliament and all Ministries; all women should have equal opportunity, but women should compete on merit.—-Yours, etc.,
S. A. FLEMING. July 23, 1986.
